Globalization and regional economic integration within ASEAN have encouraged the increasing liberalization of trade, creating both opportunities and challenges for Indonesia in export-import activities. However, amid this trade openness, Indonesia still faces challenges in the form of suboptimal competitiveness within the free trade competition in the ASEAN region. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of trade liberalization policies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region and their impact on Indonesia’s export-import performance and competitiveness. The main policies examined include the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) as instruments of regional economic integration. The method used in this study is a literature review by examining various journals and related academic sources. The results show that trade liberalization has positive impacts, including increased exports, production efficiency, and foreign investment inflows. However, on the other hand, there are also negative impacts such as rising imports, pressure on local industries, regional disparities, and the suboptimal utilization of export opportunities. In addition, Indonesia’s competitiveness within the ASEAN region remains uneven and tends to lag behind several other member countries. Therefore, improvements in the quality of human resources, industrial efficiency, and infrastructure are needed to maximize the benefits of trade liberalization.
